Nyaranta vidéki birtokára érkezik Anna Petrovna, a még mindig fiatal és szép özvegy tábornokné. Ilyenkor tiszteletüket teszik nála a "helyiek": a nősülni készülő idős földbirtokos, a kocsmatulajdonos kereskedő és fiaik, a házitanító és élete párja, a nyugállományú ezredes és fia, a körorvos is. És kezdetét veszi a nyári szezon, a véget nem érő evészet, ivászat, az adomák és tréfák, a flörtök és vadászatok sora. Ezen a reggelen már csak Platonovot várják, a társaság középpontját, aki merész élceivel, filozofikus aforizmáival, meghökkentő beszólásaival tartja izgalomban hálás hallgatóságát. Platonov megérkezik és rajongva veszik őt körül. De ezen a nyáron tréfái kegyetlenebbek, élcei maróbbak, udvarlásai bántóak, felsebzik a szívet. A nappalok összefolynak az éjszakákkal, a szenvedélyek az indulatokkal. Platonov nem bír magával - mindenkit az örvénybe ránt.
