It did not take long for a chance meeting between Krisztina Tóth, a highly popular, multi-volume poet and writer living in London, and Nikoletta Szőke, a vocalist who has spread her wings on the Hungarian jazz scene in recent years, to lead to a fruitful collaboration. A 29-year-old female bass player from India. These few words are enough for most people to immediately think of Mohini Dey. Despite her young age, pages could be filled listing all the artists and festivals she has performed with and at since the age of nine. It was her father, also a bass player, who started her on her professional path, a journey which has so far brought her into contact with Steve Vai, Zakir Hussain, Quincy Jones, Vinnie Colaiuta, and Gergő Borlai.

Many people were surprised when, after a successful two-year streak during which they won the A38 talent competition known as Talentométer and conquered stages across Europe, including Müpa Budapest, makrohang split up. They then caused another, more pleasant surprise with the news in 2023 that they would be reviving what they themselves call their “jazz for metalheads” sound.

It has been a long time since we thought of Cécile McLorin Salvant as merely the promising winner of the 2010 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. Her expressive voice capable of conveying profound emotions and refined sentiments, her virtuoso improvisation, and her brave, experimental combinations of styles have now come to represent a point of reference to a new generation.

The dice and the stopwatch will be coming out again at the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall as it hosts another round of musical ‘battle’. This provocative artist, who continually steps beyond conventional aesthetic frameworks, has, in recent years, published grotesque, absurd, ironic, and irresistibly entertaining poems under the pseudonym Sándor Posztpetőfi, collected in the volume entitled Szibériai borbély (The Barber of Siberia). Szilágyi Ákos is joined on what promises to be an unforgettable evening by the exceptional guitarist of the Makám ensemble, Zoltán Krulik.
