Two vastly different yet mutually enriching musical universes meet on the Müpa stage this evening: Söndörgő, one of Hungary’s most exciting representatives of Balkan and South Slavic musical traditions, and the world-renowned Balanescu Quartet, which masterfully combines contemporary classical music with boundary-defying creative improvisation.

What makes the Mass in B minor so unique is the fact that in it Bach – most unusually for a Lutheran composer – set the liturgical texts of the entire mass cycle to music.

The ensemble formed by singer-pianist Tamara Mózes and keyboardist-composer Zsolt Kaltenecker is constantly looking for unique ways to blend jazz, pop, rock, electronic sounds, progressive elements and improvisation.

Дeva is one of the most original artists on the Hungarian electronic music scene today. Her grandiose evening entitled Virágzás (Blossoming) promises to be a true celebration, where her distinctive soundscape will merge with acoustic elements, polyphonic vocals, and string arrangements.

Eszter Bíró’s latest show invites the whole family on a playful expedition: with songs and stories, we traverse continents and eras to discover the power that lies in curiosity and singing together. During the concert, the children’s clapping will find the rhythm, and their voices the melody while parents gather some new ideas for ways to weave music into everyday learning.

It did not take long for a chance meeting between Krisztina Tóth, a highly popular, multi-volume poet and writer living in London, and Nikoletta Szőke, a vocalist who has spread her wings on the Hungarian jazz scene in recent years, to lead to a fruitful collaboration. Their uncompromising artistic approaches inspired a unique, remarkably exciting and singular experiment rooted in the dialogue between poetry and song.

Miles Davis, one of the most recognisable figures in jazz history, would have celebrated his hundredth birthday in 2026. To mark the occasion, a star trumpet player in the world of contemporary jazz, Ambrose Akinmusire, has come together with the Brussels Jazz Orchestra to embark on a joint tour, honour the giant of the genre, pay tribute to his legacy, and go beyond it by creating new works and inventive arrangements that reimagine the Miles Davis’s genius in the context of modern jazz.

Three stories taking place over the course of a single night in Memphis, seen from three different points of view. Jim Jarmusch has come up with an incredibly exciting storytelling technique for this film. (He has often chosen unusual narrative forms in his later works.) Furthermore, he only reveals it in the second part of the triptych.

The Oscar-winning composer Tan Dun’s landmark opera blends Eastern philosophy with the language of Western music. This is the first time the work will be heard in Hungary, and it will be conducted by the composer himself. Set in the 7th century, it tells the story of the passionate love of a Japanese prince and a Chinese princess, and of their fateful quest for the legendary The Classic of Tea by Lu Yu.

Born 125 years ago, László Németh rightly deserves a place on any list of the most significant authors of 20th-century Hungarian literature. This programme aims not only to commemorate the writer’s diverse oeuvre, but also to encourage the audience to reread and rediscover it by recalling passages, both familiar and lesser-known, selected from different eras of his career.

Now celebrating its 30th anniversary, Söndörgő is Müpa Budapest’s Ensemble of the Season, which means it will be giving several concerts that break with tradition in the course of the 2025-26 season. Among these will be an evening founded on international collaboration that features three outstanding musicians from the world-renowned progressive jazz-funk-fusion band Snarky Puppy: Michael League, Jay Jennings, and Chris Bullock.

Bea Palya’s series entitled “My Silks” has been running with great success since 2015. At these concerts, where she also performs with her excellent band, Palya always introduces a female vocalist less familiar to the Hungarian audience. The events focus on bridging musical worlds and the meeting of two voices, as the artists perform both their solo material and together in the form of duets.

A 29-year-old female bass player from India. These few words are enough for most people to immediately think of Mohini Dey. Despite her young age, pages could be filled listing all the artists and festivals she has performed with and at since the age of nine. It was her father, also a bass player, who started her on her professional path, a journey which has so far brought her into contact with Steve Vai, Zakir Hussain, Quincy Jones, Vinnie Colaiuta, and Gergő Borlai.

Like Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese is passionately in love with New York City. There is no doubt, however, that Scorsese sees a different city. His is dirtier, edgier, and slightly more full of crime and criminals. Scorsese’s home turf is Little Italy, in Lower Manhattan. On the other hand, New York, New York clearly shows that the two are both jazz fans.

This programme is like a lavishly laid festive table set in the heart of Krakow: behind the dishes lie deep emotions, rich tradition and special musical seasonings. It kicks off with Stanisław Moniuszko’s fabulous fantasy overture, which combines a pinch of romance and a helping of fairy dust with lots of dramatic magic.

Many people were surprised when, after a successful two-year streak during which they won the A38 talent competition known as Talentométer and conquered stages across Europe, including Müpa Budapest, makrohang split up. They then caused another, more pleasant surprise with the news in 2023 that they would be reviving what they themselves call their “jazz for metalheads” sound.

It is not exclusively Hungarians that Müpa Budapest honours with the prestigious title of Artist of the Season: foreign musicians, such as the Russian piano virtuoso Denis Matsuev, for instance, have also been distinguished in this way. The prerequisites are obvious: a high level of professional excellence and a fruitful relationship with Müpa Budapest.

A rainbow of sounds from the orchestra, enigmatic dialogues and mysterious riddles. Not to mention a treacherous dwarf and a glorious young hero. Who after slaying a dragon and tasting its blood, is able to understand the prophetic singing of a bird. And then crosses through a wall of fire to discover both the woman who is his mate and, through his love for her, fear.

There can hardly be imagined in our time a work that conveys a more important message to humanity, as it debates the possible fate of the earth, about threats to the natural environment than Götterdämmerung does. Perhaps there is still time for us to return the ring to the Rhinemaidens.
