A trio with two violas, a trio with viola and clarinet, a trio with double bass, and finally a “real” piano trio with the Hungarian-sounding finale (Rondo all’Ongarese) of the famous piece in G major by Joseph Haydn are often referred to as the “Gypsy Trio”. According to the outstanding pianist and music historian Charles Rosen, “alongside Mozart’s concertos, Haydn’s trios are the most brilliant examples of the pre-Beethoven piano literature. At the same time, virtuosity does not come at the expense of depth of content, just like it is similarly unlikely to happen in the case of Mozart’s concertos or Beethoven’s sonatas.”
