Ibsen’s Peer Gynt is without doubt one of the most complex dramas. Edvard Grieg’s visionary, expansive incidental music also became popular in its own right. As he studied Ibsen’s text and Grieg’s music, Romanian-born choreographer Edward Clug came to the conclusion that their respective visions of Peer Gynt differ in so many points that they can safely be considered two independent, entirely autonomous readings.
Inspired by the music, Edward Clug wrote his own narrative of Peer Gynt – that is, a ballet libretto –, which proved impossible to perform with only the original incidental music. The Slovene National Theatre Maribor’s highly spectacular production also incorporates excerpts from Grieg’s best-known concert hall compositions, as well as from his pieces for chamber ensembles and solo instruments.
