Margaret Island - Refraction (Fénytörés)
with the Szeged Contemporary Dance Company
The merger of song and dance into an organic whole takes the audience on a journey in which the message of the band's lyrics and the mood of their melodies come to life and made visible on stage. A show with reimagined music is brought to life in unique visions, at times slightly distorting, at others emphasising the message.
The stage work of Margaret Island's Refraction, dreamed up with choreographer-director Gergely Czár and realised in collaboration with the dancers of the Szeged Contemporary Dance Company, is composed of loosely woven stories and episodic scenes, whose central character is the band's singer, Viki Lábas, who, together with the audience, finds herself in a world that has seemingly fallen to pieces, where the only possible way out appears to be to start anew and rebuild. From this terminal state, with characters constantly appearing on stage, they begin to rediscover and rebuild life, to revive broken relationships, to seek new chances and to start achieving what we all long for: to love and be loved. As everything falls into place, and the contours of a new space and new possibilities emerge, the space fills with colour and sound, apathy becomes dance, silence becomes music and noise. The characters that constantly fill the space are all connected to each other in some way, to the music and to Viki, creating an all-encompassing web of relationships where bonds, relations and conflicts form or fade in the blink of an eye.
The life situations portrayed by the performers amplify, even add new layers to the well-known songs, while in other cases the meaning of the lyrics and the atmosphere of the music lend delicate nuances to the relationships that are unfolding before our eyes.
