Monteverdi, the Italian master of the early Baroque period, was the first great figure in opera, as well as the most important Italian practitioner of the genre of madrigals. Like many other composers, he occasionally blurred the boundaries between genres, sometimes making his madrigals suitable for the stage and certain excerpts from his operas lyrical compositions that could also be sung independently. This is the basis for this concert by Christina Pluhar's ensemble L'Arpeggiata when they present an 80-minute theatrical production compiled from works by the composer and his contemporaries at Müpa Budapest's Early Music Festival.

Clorinda, Monteverdi's dramatic masterpiece from his eighth volume of madrigals. Before that, however, we will hear excerpts from his seventh volume of madrigals and from two of Monteverdi's operas (L'Orfeo and Poppea), and the compilers of the programme have even included the works of other Italian Baroque masters (Maurizio Cazzati, Antonio Sartorio, Luigi Rossi and Cristoforo Caresana) in the musical stream of vocal and instrumental movements that will be performed this evening. The star of this production directed by Francesca Lattuada and featuring costumes by Bruno Fatalot and lighting effects by Christian Dubet will be the globally celebrated Mexican tenor Rolando Villazón, joined by soprano Céline Scheen, countertenor Valer Sabadus, mezzo-soprano Luciana Mancini, tenor Zachary Wilder and bass Joao Fernandes, who are all also internationally renowned artists in their own rights. Founded by the Austrian theorbo-player, harpist and conductor Christina Pluhar in 2000, the early music ensemble L'Arpeggiata is known for the spirit of discovery that pervades their productions.
