The happiness of the couple is shadowed by the intrigues of China"s conservative leader, Tschang who hates the new European woman. He commands Sou-Chong to get married according to old Chinese traditions as it is written by the laws of his mother country.
The prince should marry four Chinese girls of noble family. The girls have been chosen, and the date of the wedding is set. Sou-Chong seemingly agrees to marry, but he doesn’t want to forsake Lisa. Count Gustav von Pottenstein arrives at this point from Vienna who has been in love with Lisa for a long time. He tells Lisa that the prince has to get married again. There is no other choice for Lisa, she has to flee China…
