This programme is like a lavishly laid festive table set in the heart of Krakow: behind the dishes lie deep emotions, rich tradition and special musical seasonings. The 1924 silent film by Buster Keaton, the deadpan burlesque master of the stony face who always took extraordinary risks both as an actor and a director, will be screened before the Müpa audience on this occasion with improvised organ accompaniment.

Two vastly different yet mutually enriching musical universes meet on the Müpa stage this evening: Söndörgő, one of Hungary’s most exciting representatives of Balkan and South Slavic musical traditions, and the world-renowned Balanescu Quartet, which masterfully combines contemporary classical music with boundary-defying creative improvisation.

Born in Vilnius and with Armenian roots, the soprano Asmik Grigorian is one of the biggest favourites – and no longer an outside favourite – on today’s international opera scene.

This representative birthday tribute to one of the most significant writers in contemporary Hungarian literature, György Spiró, promises a unique experience for the audience: a memorable encounter with an author who recently published yet another masterpiece, the novel Padmaly.

Miles Davis, one of the most recognisable figures in jazz history, would have celebrated his hundredth birthday in 2026. To mark the occasion, a star trumpet player in the world of contemporary jazz, Ambrose Akinmusire, has come together with the Brussels Jazz Orchestra to embark on a joint tour, honour the giant of the genre, pay tribute to his legacy, and go beyond it by creating new works and inventive arrangements that reimagine the Miles Davis’s genius in the context of modern jazz.

The Oscar-winning composer Tan Dun’s landmark opera blends Eastern philosophy with the language of Western music. This is the first time the work will be heard in Hungary, and it will be conducted by the composer himself. Set in the 7th century, it tells the story of the passionate love of a Japanese prince and a Chinese princess, and of their fateful quest for the legendary The Classic of Tea by Lu Yu.

Although the concept behind the productions has always been a mature one, over the years the Ring has been rejuvenated within the framework of a constant idea and reborn in the details. Another permanent feature is the conducting method - one combining humanism with perfectionism - of music director Ádám Fischer.

Twenty-five years ago, four highly skilled French musicians decided to take the freedom of jazz and the pulsating sound of funk, and shape them into an entirely new concept by exploiting the possibilities offered by electronica. The experiment proved successful, and Electro Deluxe was born in Paris. Later, courtesy of American singer James Copley, the band discovered new vistas to explore.
