The theme of the notorious womanizer has appeared in countless variations in the world of motion pictures (including some Hungarian versions), and opera films have reached cinema and television screens in their hundreds. Joseph Losey’s 1979 film stands out as it is not a recorded version of an opera performance. Instead, it is a visually stunning film in which Losey showcases his talents both as a film and a theatre director.
