The main character in Handel's great oratorio of the Old Testament is the powerful, solitary hero of the war between the Jews and Philistines. Samson's downfall was caused by the betrayal of his wife, Delilah, a Philistine by birth, who cut off her husband's hair in his sleep, where his power dwelled. In the meantime, the blinded prisoner's hair grew back again and Samson, with his newly found strength, burst the columns of the Temple, which buried him and the celebrating Philistines under the ruins. The libretto written by Newburgh Hamilton was based on John Milton's poem of 1671 "Samson Agonistes" (A struggling Samson). The oratorio was premiered in London (Theatre Royal, Coventgarden) on 18 February 1743.
Somewhat unusual in the Baroque period was Handel's decision to entrust the title role to a tenor singer. Beside him, two extremely demanding bass (Manoa, Samson's father and Harapha, Philistine chief), Delilah, the wife who betrayed her husband (whose scene of asking forgiveness is one of the most beautiful parts of the oratorio), and Micah, Samson's friend constitute the main characters. One Jewish and a Philistine woman and a man complete the list of participants.
In Handel's English-speaking oratorios the choir is always given a decisive role in both dramaturgical and musical aspects. The choir fulfills a dual mission in Samson: different musical means are used to present the Jews and the Philistines.
Like his other oratorios, Samson was repeatedly reworked by Handel following the premiere. The surviving documents show that the author made 11 new versions of the oratorio, by deletions, insertions, transpositions, and arrangement changes. Typical of the whole oeuvre, Samson also borrows from other works and contains recycled pieces (e.g. the Cantata Mi palpita il cor or the funeral march from Saul).
This powerfully poignant oratorio is an encounter between the blind poet's monumental poem and the composer who later lost his eyesight too. Contemporaries recorded that the blind Handel always reacted with heightened agitation while listening to later performances of one of the most personal arias of Samson, "Total Eclipse" (complete darkness).
The concert fits in the premiere series pre-senting Handel's oratorios as a continuation of the concerts of recent years (Esther, La Resurrezione, Deborah, Saul).
