Musical Background and Complexity of Cuban Music.
Ifthere is onethingto display Cubanmentality the best, thenit is music and
dance. Today, worldwidewell-knownstyles of music, like Rumba, Mambo, Cha
ChaCha and Salsaoriginatefrom 4 basicelements, puttogetherby the times.
Originally, despitepercussions and claves, thereare no otherinstruments. The
integration of melodicinstrumentsdeveloped the todayknown, commercialised
version of the Rumba and otherfashionabledanceslike the Mambo. The
interaction of singers and the choirmarks the „Son“, originator of today’s Salsa.
The „Danzon“ has beenrejectedby the upperclass in Cubafor a longtime, but
istoday the most populardanceon the island. The ChaChaChadeveloped out
of it. Singers, travellingthrough the country, usedto sing sad and beautiful
ballads. During the revolutionaryyears, the lyricswerechangedthematically and
usedfor propaganda. Later, the musiciansreturnedtotheiroriginalcontents.
Today, the „Cuban“ style of musicpeoplerealizewhentravellingCuba, therefore
is a synthesis of AfricanpercussionwithSpanishCoplas and its
instrumentalisation. The Son is definitely the most popularone, inventedby the
sugarcane-harvesters in Santiago during the 1920´s.
Originally, this performance was made for 3 people, accompaniedby the Spanish
and Latin-American, 3-doublestringed guitar. Claves and Maracasbuilt the
rhythm. After and after, with the massive and fastspread of the Sonthroughout
the country, more instrumentsjoined the show: the woodenBass, Bongos,
Marimbulas and in the 1940´s and 50´s Trumpets, comingfromtraditional
American Big-Band.
Thisbuilds a complex, polyrhythmiccombination of tones, whichsoundslike the
perfectchaosto European ears in the firstplace. But the defined and unique
soundsdrag the audience and putsitunder a fascinatedspell.

combination of Cubanjoy of life.
BIOGRAPHY
SottoVictor-Antunez,
born 1949 as a child of a singer and a Tres-Guitar-player has music in hisblood,
nowonderwhenjoyfulsounds and rhythms of cubanmusicalready
accompaniedhimwhen he was a baby. Sottosoonknew, „Music is my life!“.
He startedto play Congas, studied the trumpet, performed in severalbandse.g.
the „Sierra Maestra“ of Juan de Marcos Gonzáles and discovered singing to be
hispassion.
In the 1980´s he made historywith the famous Ibrahim Ferrer. On a journeyto
one of the 50 concertstheyheldtogether, the world-famous „DosGardenias“
wascreated. Withthis hit, Ibrahim Ferrertravelledto the USA in 1989 and were
signedby a major label.
Estanislao „Augusto“ BlancoZequeirawas the happiest baby
onearth, sosayshisfamily, when he couldjoin the rehearsals of hisparents, just
lying in the cradlenearby. Born in 1939 and infectedby a musical-fever in his
earlyage, 6-year-old Augustostartedto play percussionbutswitchedsoonto
joinhismother´s passionfor singing. At the age of ten, he alreadyhelped
numerousCubanstoconquer the hearts of theirbeloved. For a couple of Pesos,
the keenyoungfellowsang the most beautiful love songsunder the balcony of a
youngwoman. Duringhisstudies of music he wasnotonlyabletodevelophis
talent in singing, butalsolearnedallinstruments of Cubanmusic and playsthem
alluntilthisday. Evenbeforebecoming a bigshot in musichimself, he metall the
bignumbers of the Cubansceneat an earlyage. Being 13, he becamefriends
with Ibrahim Ferrer, fromthenonperformingtogetherformanyyears. Omara
Portuondo is alsoone of Augustos colleagues and friends, whentheyperform
togetherat the Carneval in Santiago de Cuba the crowdgoeswild.
