This concert is an occasion to gain some familiarity with the instrument's mysteries from closer up, from a young clarinet phenomenon.
'I had the pleasure of being Magnus Holmander's teacher at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music in Stockholm, and as such was able to follow his fantastic development and experience both his openness toward the new repertoire and his perfectionism, which was much in evidence when he was preparing for concerts. In time, the most talented student at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music developed into on of his country's finest clarinettists.' This is how he was described by his teacher Martin Frost (who himself will be playing at Müpa Budapest in January 2020 at the concert of the Tonhalle Orchestra Zürich).
The young artist truly is open, as his Rising Stars programme presented by the European Concert Hall Organisation includes only one of the most popular repertoire pieces for his instrument: the Brahms Sonata in F minor. He will also be introducing listeners to rarities with one work each by Donizetti and the 19th-century clarinettist and composer Luigi Bassi. Like all of the performers introducing themselves in the Rising Stars series, Holmander, too, will be playing a new composition: a work by Molly Kien, who was born in the United States in 1979 and has lived in Sweden since 2002.
It is important to note that, as Holmander's partner at the concert, the 30-year-old Chinese-Swede David Huang is not merely an 'accompanist': he is a virtuoso pianist recognised as both a soloist and a chamber musician who has had successful showings at competitions.
